Answer

The Government of Canada has created a tool to help you figure out which COVID-19 benefits you might qualify for. The tool does not guarantee that you'll be eligible. But it's a good place to start.

Use this chart to learn about the eligibility rules and what's available under each program.

The Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) is for people who’ve stopped working because of COVID-19. It gives $500 a week to those who qualify, for up to 24 weeks.

If you have more than one job, it’s not clear if this means:

  • you must have completely stopped working at all of your jobs, or
  • you just need to have stopped working at one of your jobs.

You can earn up to $1,000 a month and still get the CERB. So this suggests that you may be able to get CERB payments if you’ve stopped one job but continue another, as long as you don’t earn more than $1,000.

We’ll update this information as soon as the government has made this clear.

Applying for the CERB

For more information about applying for the CERB, read Who can get the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) and how do I apply?

You can apply for the CERB either through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or Service Canada. To find out which one you should apply through, answer these questions.

If you apply through the CRA, you must have stopped working for 14 days in a row, during the 4-week period you’re applying for.

If you apply through Service Canada, you must have stopped working for 7 days in a row, during the 2-week period that you’re applying for.

If you have questions about whether you’re eligible for the CERB, you can contact the CRA at 1-833-966-2099, or Service Canada at 1-833-699-0299.
