Answer

The government has said that starting in September they will move people from the CERB to a new Employment Insurance program. They have not said what this new program will look like. We will update this page as more information is released.

In the meantime, if you have questions about whether you’re eligible for the CERB, you can contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) at 1-833-966-2099, or Service Canada at 1-833-699-0299.

You get the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) for periods of either 2 weeks or 4 weeks at a time, depending on where you apply.

You can apply for the CERB either through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or Service Canada. To find out which one you need to apply through, you have to answer some questions.

You will get $500 a week for up to 24 weeks. But after each 2-week or 4-week period, you have to show that you’re still eligible. This is a quick process.

Earning other income

You can earn up to $1,000 a month in other income and still be eligible for the CERB.

If you applied through the CRA

If you applied through the CRA, you get the CERB for 4 weeks at a time. At the end of each of the 4 weeks, you must re-apply for the CERB.

You can to this online if you have a CRA account. If you don’t have an account, you can do it by telephone at 1-800-959-8281.

If you applied through Service Canada

If you applied through Service Canada, you get the CERB for 2 weeks at a time. At the end of each of the 2 weeks, you must show that you still qualify. You do this by filling out a report card, the same as if you were getting regular Employment Insurance (EI) payments.

The report card is online. Or, you can report by telephone.

It’s the same process you would use if you were getting EI. You have to report how much you earn each week. And you have to attest, which means promise, that you still qualify for the CERB.
