What can my employer take from my pay?

When your employer takes money from your pay, these are often called deductions.

There are that the law says your employer must take. For example, your employer must take money from your pay for:

  • income tax
  • Employment Insurance (EI) premiums
  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contribution

Your employer must send this money to the government. The government knows that the money is for you because your employer includes your  with the payments.

There are some other reasons why employers can take money. And there are situations where the law says they cannot take money from your pay. Read more in Step 2.
