I’m waiting for my permanent residence status during COVID-19. What can I do?
Usually (PR) status is confirmed in an in-person interview, but Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has not been able to offer many interviews because of COVID-19. Many people are waiting for IRCC to finalize their PR applications. To address this situation, IRCC announced a new online tool where you can confirm your PR status without going to an interview. It’s called the Permanent residence confirmation portal.
Only IRCC can create an account for you to use the portal. Once IRCC approves your application for PR, they will contact you. Make sure IRCC has your correct contact information. If you need to update your information, you can use the IRCC web form.
IRCC will ask you to:
- confirm that you want to use the portal
- provide your email address
- provide an email address for each person listed on your application
If you agree to use to use the portal, IRCC will send you another email with a link to the portal and instructions on how to sign in. The portal is only for you to use. Your legal representative can’t use the portal for you.
You can use the portal to:
- declare that you are in Canada
- confirm your address
- upload a recent photo of yourself for your PR card
- see proof of your PR status
- share personal information safely
Make sure the photo you submit meets IRCC’s photo requirements. IRCC will let you know if you have to upload another photo or if they have any questions. If you’re approved, IRCC will send your PR card to you within a few weeks.
The portal can’t be used to renew your PR card. There is another application process to renew your PR card.
