1. Understand the charges against you

If you don’t follow the conditions of your peace bond, you may be charged with disobeying an order of the court or breach of recognizance. These are both criminal charges.

Disobeying an order of the court

A peace bond is a court order. If you disobey the conditions of your peace bond, you can be charged with disobeying an order of the court. If you're convicted, you could go to jail for up to 2 years.

Breach of recognizance

A peace bond is sometimes referred to as a s.810 recognizance. It is called this because section 810 of the Criminal Code gives the court authority to order this type of peace bond. If you don’t follow the conditions of your s. 810 peace bond, you can be charged with breach of recognizance. If you're convicted, you could go to jail for up to 4 years.
