3. Submit your application

Whether you're applying for a criminal record check, criminal record and judicial matters check, or a vulnerable sector record check, the information you need to give the police is the same.

You must include the following in your application:

• the reason for your application
• your full name
• your date of birth
• your sex
• your mailing address
• your phone number
• the processing fees (if applicable)

Where to apply

Each police station has its own way of doing things and charges a different amount for processing your application. Depending on the location, you may be able to apply for a criminal record check online, in person, or by mail.

In most situations, the simplest thing is to apply at your local police station. Some police stations only do record checks for people who live in their area. But the Toronto Police Service will do criminal record checks and clearance letters for people who don't live in Toronto.

If you're applying for a vulnerable sector record check, you must go to your local police station. Some of the records included in the search are only available at the local police station.

Organizations that need vulnerable sector record checks must register with the police as a vulnerable sector agency. If an organization needs a vulnerable sector record check from you, they will give you an application form. Bring the completed application to your local police station along with any fees that are required. If you're applying for a volunteer position in the vulnerable sector, you can ask to have your fee reduced.
