1. Know when you have to identify yourself

In most cases, when the police approach you for a street check, you do not have to show the police your ID or answer any questions.

But, there are some situations where you have to show them your ID or tell the police who you are. The police follow different rules in these situations.

For example, the police don't have to follow the street check rules and have broader powers to stop you and ask you questions if:

• they stop you when you're driving
• they detain or arrest you
• they are executing a warrant
• they are investigating a crime that has occurred
