1. Meet with your healthcare provider

Talk to your healthcare provider to learn more about the medicinal benefits of cannabis. This could be a physician or a nurse practitioner. If they decide that medicinal cannabis may help treat your symptoms, they will give you a medical document.

Your medical document is like a prescription. It will show the daily amount of dried cannabis in grams that your healthcare provider allows you to use.

Your medical document is valid for a maximum of one year. You must renew your medical document every year if you want to continue to use or grow medicinal cannabis.

If you plan to get medicinal cannabis in more than one way, you have to ask your healthcare provider for more than one medical document.

Your medical document allows you to register with:

Storing and carrying cannabis

Because recreational cannabis is now legal, adults can store as much cannabis as they want at home as long as they got it legally.

If you're a medicinal cannabis user, you're allowed to carry more cannabis in public than a recreational user. Besides the 30 grams you can carry in public for recreational use, you can also carry the lesser of:

  • 150 grams of cannabis, or
  • a 30-day supply of dried cannabis or the equivalent in another cannabis product.

You must be able to show that you're allowed to have more than 30 grams in public if the police ask you for proof. See Step 5 for more information.
