1. Talk to the collection agency

A collection agency called me. Do I have to talk to them?
This question has an answer and 4 steps

1. Talk to the collection agency

When you talk to the collection agency, try to make a payment plan that you can afford.

Make sure you deal only with the collection agency and not the person or company you first owed the money to. Talking to both of them can be confusing and can make it harder to agree about paying off the debt.

When you make a payment plan with the collection agency, get them to confirm in writing that there is a plan. And, always get a written receipt from them when you make a payment.

If you’re having problems dealing with the collection agency, a non-profit credit counsellor might be able to help you. See Step 3.
