2. Learn what to do if you’re not a rights-holder

If your child speaks French but isn't a French-language rights-holder, they can apply to go to an elementary or secondary school in French. The local school board reviews their application and decides whether to admit them based on the school board's policy.

The application usually includes an interview between the admissions committee, your child, and you as their parents. That way, the admissions committee can see if your child speaks, reads, and writes French at the same level as other students their age.

If your child is accepted and enrolled in a French-language school:

• you as their parents become French-language rights-holders
• your child will have the right to a French-language education anywhere in Canada
• your child will have the right to register their children at a French-language school
