3. Call an inspector or the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit
Question & Answer
How much heat does my landlord have to provide? If your landlord does not fix the problem, you can call your local property standards or department, your town or city hall, municipal office, or local councillor. Many cities, towns, and other municipalities have inspectors who can order your landlord to fix the heating problem.
If an inspector makes an order, you should ask for a copy of it. You might have to send in a freedom of information request to your municipality to get a copy.
You can also contact the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit (). The RHEU is a government service that tries to make sure landlords and tenants follow the law. You can call the RHEU toll-free at 1-888-772-9277.
Sometimes landlords will change their behaviour when the RHEU contacts them.
