Get a copy of your rental agreement

Once you sign a written rental agreement or lease, your landlord must give you a copy of it. If your landlord does not give you a copy within 21 days of when you asked for a copy of your rental agreement, you can stop paying rent for one month. It's a good idea to tell your landlord why you're not paying the rent.

If your landlord gives you a copy within 30 days of when you held back the rent, you have to give them the rent you did not pay.
