Can I get health insurance if I’m not a permanent resident?During COVID-19, Ontario has waived the 3-month waiting period. This means you could qualify for OHIP as soon as you arrive.
To qualify for OHIP, you also must meet all of the following requirements:
- You have lived in Ontario for 3 months and have your main home in Ontario.
- You have not left Ontario for more than 30 days during the first 183 days that you lived in Ontario.
- You have not left Ontario for more than 153 days in any year.
And at least one of the following must apply to you:
- You're a Canadian citizen, , or a “” according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
- You applied to be a permanent resident or Canadian citizen and IRCC has said that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply.
- You have a valid work permit for an Ontario employer that is good for at least 6 months, you work full-time in Ontario, and you have a letter from your employer saying you will be working for them for at least 6 months.
- You're a foreign clergy member or other religious official who is serving a religious congregation for at least 6 months.
- Your or parent is a foreign worker who is eligible for OHIP.
If you meet the requirements for OHIP, then you can apply for an Ontario Health Card. This card gives you access to OHIP benefits.
