Question and answer
Can I work in Canada if I’m not a permanent resident? To get a work permit you must fill out a work permit application form. You can also use this form if you have a work permit that is going to expire soon.
Use our Guided Pathways to fill out the draft forms to apply for an open work permit from within Canada
What you need to apply
Download and complete the application form. Read the guide for help and more information. Most people have to apply online but some people can apply on paper. If you're not able to apply online because of a disability, you can use a paper form.
You might have to provide the following documents:
- proof of identity, such as a passport or national identity card
- proof of your immigration status, for example, a copy of your student permit, or permit
- information about your family and
- a written job offer from your employer
- proof that you're qualified for the job you've been offered, like a resume or trade certification
The exact documents you need to apply can be different depending on if you're applying for an open or closed work permit. To make sure that you have everything you need, the government has checklists that you must submit with your application. If you're applying from:
- inside Canada, use this checklist,
- outside of Canada, then use this checklist.
Biometrics
“Biometrics” include your fingerprints and digital photograph. If you already gave your biometrics to the Canadian government, you might not have to give them again when you apply for a work permit. Use the Check Status tool to see if your biometrics are still valid. You might also have to pay a fee of $85.
