Learn the rules about OW and long-term care

Beware of scams

People have been getting phone calls with a pre-recorded message telling them their Ontario Works account has been deleted.

This is a scam to trick you into sharing your personal information. If you get a call like that, hang up the phone. You can report these calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

While you're in a long-term care home for a short stay, Ontario Works (OW) pays your , including the amount they give you for housing.

This can be for up to 6 months if:

  • you have a place to live other than the long-term care home, and
  • you're still paying housing costs for it, for example, rent.

OW can reduce the amount of your assistance after 6 months.
