Learn about being a citizen in more than one country

Each country has its own laws about citizenship. Canada's laws say that people can be citizens of Canada and other countries at the same time.

But if you're a citizen of another country, you may want to know what can happen to that citizenship if you become a Canadian citizen. For example:

  • you might lose the other citizenship
  • the other country might not accept that you're a Canadian citizen

Contacting an embassy or consulate

To find out more, you may want to check with the other country's embassy or consulate.

But if you're a protected person, it may not be a good idea to do this yourself. This is because contacting authorities of the country you're afraid to return to might be evidence that Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) could use in applying for a cessation order against you. This is because CBSA might think that you no longer need Canada's protection.

So it's best to ask someone else to check for you.
