I’m a permanent resident. How do I apply for Canadian citizenship?

Next steps

1. Prove who you are and that you meet the residency requirement 2. Include proof that you meet the language requirement 3. Include applications for other family members 4. Check your application and get legal advice if needed 5. Pay the fees and send in your application

Most people can now apply for Canadian citizenship online through the new Canadian Citizenship Portal.

You must still apply on paper if:

  1. you want your representative to complete and submit your application for you, or
  2. you include time as a Crown servant or the family member of a Crown servant when you calculate your time spent outside Canada.

Before you apply for Canadian citizenship, you need to find out if:

  • you’re eligible to apply, and
  • it’s a good idea for you to apply.

Application package

The package you use to apply for Canadian citizenship includes:

  • the forms you need to complete
  • instructions for completing the forms
  • a checklist to make sure you send in the documents you need to include

You need to use the most recent forms on the Government of Canada website.

Follow these steps to open and save an IRCC form in PDF format, using Adobe Acrobat Reader for both PC and Mac users. You cannot open the forms on your phone or tablet.

This question is for people who use the citizenship application that’s for adults who are 18 years of age and older.

You use a different application package if you:

  • are an adult who served with the Canadian Armed Forces
  • are a parent or guardian applying for a child younger than age 18
  • are younger than 18 and applying on your own because you either do not have a Canadian parent or parents who are applying for Canadian citizenship
  • were adopted by a Canadian citizen
  • are not a citizen of any country and were born outside Canada to a Canadian parent
