Identity Documents
The 519 – Trans ID Clinic
The Trans ID Clinic at The 519 in Toronto helps 2-Spirit, trans, and non-binary people in Ontario who are experiencing poverty or homelessness with:
- identity documents
- name change
- gender marker change
- other related needs
Sessions are virtual or in person. The clinic helps with application fees based on need. For help, email TransIDclinic@the519.org, fill out the online intake form, or book an intake phone call.
The 519 also has a free Guided Trans ID Self-Help Program on the third Monday of each month. Anyone can join. Email AGonzalez@The519.org to register for the program.
Friends of Ruby Drop-In Youth Centre
The Friends of Ruby Drop-in Youth Centre supports 2SLGBTQIA+ youth ages 16 to 29 across Ontario. The Centre provides free counselling, social services, housing, and help with name and gender marker changes on identity documents. You can get help in person or remotely by phone, video call, online chat, and email. For help, register online.

Legal clinics
Legal Aid Ontario funds community legal clinics across Ontario. These clinics provide free legal services to people with low incomes who live in their area.
Some clinics help people with name and gender marker changes. Search for the clinic in your area using your postal code. If your clinic does not help with name or gender marker changes, they might commission documents for you.

HQ Toronto – Trans ID Clinic
In Toronto, HQ Toronto runs a free monthly Trans ID Clinic. The clinic offers help with forms, notarizes documents, and pays for costs related to name and gender marker changes. The clinic is open on the last Monday of each month. If Monday is a holiday, it’s open the next day. For help, register online.

Canadian Mental Health Association of York and South Simcoe – Gender Affirming Health Clinic
In York Region and South Simcoe, the Gender Affirming Health Clinic and the Community Legal Clinic of York Region run a monthly drop-in ID clinic. It’s on the last Monday of every month and available on a walk-in basis.

For people in Ottawa, the Ottawa region, and Lanark County, the Kind Space Community Centre holds a Trans ID Clinic. The clinic is run by volunteer law students from October to March. They provide free legal information about name and gender marker change on government-issued documents.
Appointments for legal information are usually remote. But you go in person to the clinic to notarize documents.

Trans Wellness Ontario
In Windsor, Trans Wellness Ontario holds ID Clinics that are run by volunteer law students. The clinic helps with name and gender marker changes and may also help with the fees. People living in the Windsor-Essex area are given priority. Email id.clinic@transwellness.ca.
Black Coalition for Aids Prevention (Black CAP)
In Toronto, Black CAP runs a monthly Trans ID Clinic for people from the African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) community. The clinic offers legal support and help with identity document forms. For help, register online.
Community and Legal Aid Services Program (CLASP) – ID Clinic
CLASP has a virtual ID clinic for people with low incomes who live in Toronto. Law students supervised by a lawyer can help people apply for certain identity documents, and for name and gender marker changes.
ServiceOntario
ServiceOntario provides access to Ontario government services. For example, with ServiceOntario, you can:
- change your name
- apply for a birth certificate
- apply for or renew a driver’s licence
- get forms commissioned to apply for Ontario government services
