How do I start an ODSP application?If you're on Ontario Works (OW), the OW office must start your application to the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).
Tell your OW worker that you want to apply for ODSP.
OW will ask you for updated information that shows you still qualify financially, unless you did this within the last 3 months.
Get the Disability Determination Package
The OW office gives you a , which has forms that ask about your health.
These forms must be filled out and sent to the . They decide if you qualify as a person with a disability.
People who do not have to prove they have a disability
Some people can get ODSP without having to prove that they're a “person with a disability”.
This means they do not have to fill out a Disability Determination Package.
Certain groups
For example, this might apply if you're in one of the following groups:
- you get disability benefits from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP-D) or the Québec Pension Plan
- you're over 65 years old but are not able to get Old Age Security
- you live in a place like a hospital that treats people with mental health issues or a special care home
- you get services or support because you have a developmental disability and you:
- own or rent a home
- live in a group home
- live in housing where you get support
If you're in one of these groups, your OW worker sends your application to the ODSP office.
Special rules
There are also special rules that apply if you:
- got ODSP before
- stopped getting it
- need to get it again
