Can I get CPP money for a family member who died?
When a person who paid into to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) dies, there are benefits that their family members may be able to get. For example:
- their spouse or may be able to get a survivor’s pension
- their dependent children may be able to get benefits for surviving children
There's also a death benefit. It's paid all at once and usually goes to the or whoever pays for the funeral.
Make sure to apply
To get these CPP pensions or benefits, you must apply after the person dies.
It's important to apply right away so you do not lose any benefits.
