3. Cancel before the contract is confirmed
Question and answer
Can I cancel my energy contract? You can cancel your energy contract before the contract is confirmed.
After you sign an energy contract, the energy retailer must contact you to make sure that you want to continue with the energy contract. This is called “confirming the contract”.
The energy retailer has to follow rules to confirm the contract. The retailer must:
- contact you by phone 10 to 45 days after you get a written copy of the contract, and
- speak to you using a script written by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB).
The script makes sure that the energy retailer tells you all the information they’re required to by the OEB. Since the calls are recorded, the OEB can check the recording to see if they followed the script if you make a complaint later. If you ask for a copy of the recording, the retailer must send it to you within 10 days.
How to cancel
When the energy retailer calls you to confirm the contract, you can tell them that you do not want to continue the contract. The retailer will then cancel the contract. You do not have to pay a cancellation fee.
