5. Cancel more than 30 days after getting your second bill
Question and answer
Can I cancel my energy contract? You can cancel your energy contract more than 30 days after you get your second bill. But you might have to pay a cancellation fee.
Every energy contract must have information about how you can cancel the contract and how much you may have to pay to cancel it.
Usually, you cannot be charged more than $50 to cancel utilities in your home. This is true whether the contract is for natural gas, electricity, or both.
But the cancellation fees can be different if your contract is for a small business, or if you use a lot more electricity or natural gas than what is normal for a home. Check what your contract says.
You do not have to pay a cancellation fee if you permanently move from the home that is getting the electricity or gas.
How to cancel
Your energy contract should have information about how to cancel your contract. This information may also be on your energy retailer’s website.
Usually, you can cancel by writing to the energy retailer or calling them. Check what your contract or the retailer’s website says.
If you cancel by phone, the energy retailer must record the call and send you written confirmation of your cancellation.
The law says energy retailers have to let you cancel your contract by writing. But they do not always have to let you cancel by phone. If your contract says you cannot cancel by phone then you have to cancel by writing to your energy retailer.
