witness

When you make a formal will, you have to sign it in front of 2 people. These people are called witnesses. They also sign your will.

For your will to be valid, you cannot leave your witness and their married partner any property in your will.

codicil

A codicil is a legal document that you create to make small changes to your will. For example, if you want to:

  • change the amount of money you're leaving someone
  • add or remove a beneficiary.

A codicil is made in the same way as a will. But it's a separate legal document.
