What can I do if I have a problem with my energy retailer?

NewUpdated December 31

An energy retailer is a company that sells electricity or natural gas services. Energy retailers are sometimes called an electricity retailer or natural gas marketer. Electricity retailers are not the government, a local distribution company, or the Ontario Energy Board (OEB).

If you’re having a problem with your energy retailer, you should first try to tell the retailer about it directly.

If you cannot fix the problem by talking to your energy retailer, you could make a complaint to the Ontario Energy Board (OEB).

The OEB regulates Ontario’s electricity and natural gas sectors. This means that the OEB makes sure that licenced energy retailers follow the rules. If a retailer breaks the rules, the OEB can take action against them.

If the retailer is not licensed by the OEB, you cannot make a complaint about them to the OEB. To find out if the energy retailer you want to make a complaint about is licensed, you can check the OEB’s website.

If you cannot complain to the OEB, you might be able to complain to the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The BBB is a non-profit organization that tries to help people resolve issues they have with a business.
