1. Understand the rules about living with family

Beware of scams

People have been getting phone calls with a pre-recorded message telling them their Ontario Works account has been deleted.

This is a scam to trick you into sharing your personal information. If you get a call like that, hang up the phone. You can report these calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

The rules about living with a spouse don't apply to close family members.

If you live with a close family member, Ontario Works (OW) might ask you to show proof of how you're related to each other. For example, you might do this by showing birth certificates that prove how you're related.

Close family members include your:

  • children, stepchildren, and grandchildren
  • parents, step-parents, and grandparents
  • brothers and sisters
  • uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews
