3. Apply for OW before your release date

Beware of scams

People have been getting phone calls with a pre-recorded message telling them their Ontario Works account has been deleted.

This is a scam to trick you into sharing your personal information. If you get a call like that, hang up the phone. You can report these calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

You may be able to apply for financial assistance from Ontario Works (OW) before you're released from custody.

You can do this if:

  • you're getting out in 10 days or less
  • you can show OW that you'll qualify for assistance when you're released

If you can make phone calls while you're in custody, you can start your application by calling OW.

If you need help to apply, someone who works in the place where you're in custody may be able to do this. For example, there might be a discharge planner or a social worker who can help you.
