Can I have my family law trial in French?
Question & AnswerCan I have my family law trial in French?
If you live in Ontario and speak French, you have the right to have your family law case in French. These are called “bilingual family law proceedings”. The law does not use the words “French proceedings” or a “French trial”.
You can do this whether your family law case is being heard at the:
- Ontario Court of Justice
- Superior Court of Justice, including the Family Court of the Superior Court of Justice
- Court of Appeal for Ontario
You can also have bilingual proceedings for other parts of your family law case such as motions, pre-trials, and conferences.
