Can I get the Canada Disability Benefit?
The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a monthly payment from the government for people who:
- have a disability, and
- are between 18 and 64 years old.
You must also:
- be approved for the disability tax credit
- be one of the following:
- a Canadian citizen
- a
- a
- a who's lived in Canada for the past 18 months
- someone who's registered or could be registered under the Indian Act
- be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes
- have filed your income taxes for the most recent tax year
If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they must also have filed their income taxes for the most recent tax year.
You must apply to get the CDB.
How much you can get
The most you can get from the CDB is $200 a month. How much you get depends on your income and the income of your spouse or common-law partner.
You can use this online tool to see how much you could get.
You do not have to pay income tax on your CDB payments.
And CDB payments do not count as income for:
- Ontario Works
- the Ontario Disability Support Program
- the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Program
This means that you will not get less money from these programs because you get the CDB.
How to apply
To apply for the CDB, fill out and send an application form to Service Canada.
You or your legal representative can do this:

- print out a paper form, and
- take it or mail it to a Service Canada office.
If you got a letter from Service Canada
Service Canada may have sent you a letter telling you how to apply. This letter has 6 numbers in the top right corner. You use this code when you apply for the CDB.
You can still apply if you did not get a letter.
