5. Learn what to do if you do not get the CDB

You can ask Service Canada to review and change their decision if:

  • they say you cannot get the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), or
  • you do not agree with the amount you're getting.

This is called a . Someone at Service Canada, who did not make the first decision, reviews your application. They can make a different decision or the same one.

How to ask for a reconsideration

You must ask for a reconsideration within 180 days of getting Service Canada's decision. And you must ask for it in writing.

You can fill out a reconsideration request form or write a letter. Your letter must include:

  • your name and address
  • the reason why you're asking for the reconsideration

You must also include the decision that you do not agree with. Give your form or letter to Service Canada by:

  • taking it to a Service Canada office
  • mailing it to:
    Service Canada Centre
    CDB Processing Centre
    P.O. Box 60
    Boucherville, Quebec J4B 5E6

If you do not agree with the new decision, you can appeal at the Social Security Tribunal.

Asking for more time

There are only certain reasons you can use when asking for more than 180 days to send in your reconsideration form or letter. These are:

  • there's an emergency that affects all of Canada or the province you live in
  • there's a disaster, like a flood or fire
  • there's a civil disturbance, like a riot
  • public services are not working because of something like a strike
  • you had a serious accident, injury, or illness you're dealing with
  • emotional or mental distress

If you need more that 180 days, you must ask for more time within one year of getting the decision you want Service Canada to reconsider.
