2. Find out what taxes and charges can be used for a rent increase

Landlords can ask for an above guideline increase (AGI) for taxes and charges that:

• come from a municipality or what's called an unorganized area in Northern Ontario, and
• apply to the rental property.

These include:

• property tax
• education tax
• rental housing licensing fees
• garbage and waste fees

Some municipal charges cannot be used to ask for a rent increase.
