3. Apply for the disability tax credit
Question & Answer
Can I get the Canada Disability Benefit? To apply for the disability tax credit, you must fill out a form called the T2201 – Disability Tax Credit Certificate.
The form has 2 parts:
- You or your legal representative fill out Part A. It asks for your personal information.
- A medical practitioner fills out Part B. It asks how your disability affects your daily life.
Your medical practitioner may charge you a fee to fill out the form. You must pay the fee. But you may be able to claim it as a medical expense on your tax return.
Apply online
You can fill out and send in the form online using your My Account with the (CRA). You can also call CRA and someone will help you fill out the online form.
When you fill out and send in Part A online, you get a reference number. Give this number to your medical practitioner. They need it when they send Part B to the CRA.
Use the paper form
You can also print and fill out a paper form. After you fill out Part A, give the form to your medical practitioner so they can fill out Part B.
You or your medical practitioner can then mail the form to the CRA. Send it to one of the tax centres listed on the last page of the form.
Or you can make a copy by scanning the form once you fill it out and send it using your My Account.
After you apply
Getting approved for the disability tax credit can take several months. In July 2025, it may take up to 15 weeks.
If the CRA approves you, they send a letter to let you know. You can also check your My Account to see their decision.
Once you're approved, you do not have to reapply for the disability tax credit, unless the CRA asks you to.
If the CRA does not approve your application, you can
- call and talk to someone at the CRA,
- ask the CRA to review the decision,
- file an objection.
