I lost my marriage certificate. How do I get another one?

To get a , one of the things you have to give the court is your original marriage certificate.

You may also need your marriage certificate to:

  • show legal proof you are
  • change your name
  • apply for certain social benefits
  • settle an estate after someone dies
  • as a record of family history

A marriage certificate is a document that proves that you and your partner are legally married. It has basic information such as your names, date and place of marriage.

A marriage certificate is not the same as a marriage licence. You apply for a marriage licence before you get married. And, you apply for a marriage certificate after you get married.

If you lost your marriage certificate, or cannot find it, the Next Steps explain how you can get another one, or what to do if you cannot get one.
