Can I install a security camera in my rental unit? 

If you're worried about your safety or the security of your home, you may want to install a security camera in your rental unit.

The law does not stop you from doing this. And it does not say where cameras can go, what they can record, or whether you need your landlord's permission.

But the law says that your landlord may evict you if you seriously disturb your landlord or another tenant, annoying them so they cannot reasonably enjoy their home, the building, or everyday life.

For example, if the camera in your rental unit is pointing at another tenant's unit and invading their privacy, your landlord can ask you to remove the camera and try to evict you.

Your landlord may also evict you if you damage your rental unit or building while installing the camera. Your landlord can ask you to pay for the cost of repairs and may try to evict you.
