How do I change the gender marker on my Ontario birth certificate? 

If you were born in Ontario, you can apply to change the gender marker on your:

• Ontario birth registration, and
• birth certificate.

You can change your gender marker to one of the following:

• F – female
• M – male
• X – non-binary

If you're at least 16 years old, you can complete and sign the adult application yourself. But if you're younger than 16, a parent has to apply for you using the child application.

You can also apply to get a birth certificate without a gender marker. Learn more about this in Step 1.

Changing your legal name 

If you were born in Ontario and you apply to change your legal name, you automatically get a new birth certificate. Read more about changing your legal name in, How do I change my legal name in Ontario?

If you're thinking about changing your gender marker as well, it's best to apply for both changes together. You do this by submitting both applications in the same envelope.

You do not have to pay the fee for a new birth certificate when you submit these applications together.

Situation in other countries 

If you plan to use your birth certificate abroad, you may want to do some research first. Find out if that country accepts birth certificates with an X or no gender marker.

Born outside Ontario

If you were born outside Ontario and you want to change the gender marker on your birth certificate, ServiceOntario cannot change it for you. You must follow the process in the province, territory, or country where you were born.
