How do I update my Ontario identity documents with my new name and gender marker?

NewUpdated August 7

To update your name on your Ontario identity documents you can use the change of name certificate you get after you apply to change your legal name. If you were born in Ontario, you also get a new birth certificate.

You then use both these documents to update your:

  • Ontario driver's licence,
  • Ontario photo card,
  • Ontario vehicle permit if you own a vehicle, such as a car or truck, and
  • Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card.

If you updated your gender marker on your birth certificate, you can use it to update your gender marker on your Ontario identity documents.

If you did not update your gender marker on your birth certificate, there are other supporting documents you can bring to update your gender marker on your Ontario identity documents.

Click on the drop-down menu below to find out what documents you need to update your name and gender marker on specific Ontario identity documents.
