2. Understand what a conditional sentence means

A conditional sentence is conditional. This means you must follow the conditions given in the order while your sentence is being served. If you don't, you might have to finish your sentence in jail.

If you're given a conditional sentence, you will have to:

• keep the peace and be of good behaviour
• appear in court when required
• report to a supervisor when required
• not travel unless you get written permission from the court or the supervisor
• tell the court or the supervisor in advance if you change your name or address
• tell the court right away if you change your occupation or job

You may also have to:

• not drink alcohol or use illegal drugs
• not own or have a weapon
• do up to 240 hours of community service
• follow any other reasonable conditions the court thinks would help make sure that you behave well and don't commit any more crimes

You have to report to a probation officer while you're serving your sentence. The police may also check on you throughout your sentence to make sure you're following the conditions in the order.
