4. Learn how to behave in court

Here are some tips when you're in court. This applies to in person and virtual hearings.

  • Wear suitable clothes. For example, don't wear hats or clothes with inappropriate language or images.
  • Don't eat or chew gum and don't drink anything except water.
  • You can't smoke or vape in court houses; don't smoke or vape on a zoom
  • When you're testifying, be respectful. Don't interrupt or speak over other people.
  • Address the judge as “your Honour”. Address defence counsel as Mr. or Ms. (last name), and address the Crown as Mr. or Madam Crown, unless they tell you otherwise.

If you are in a courtroom, you will be asked to stand when the judge enters and leaves the courtroom.

Let the judge or lawyer know if you're having trouble hearing anyone. If you're having trouble understanding because English isn't your first language, the court can arrange for a translator.
