2. Ask for a blood or DNA test

One way to prove a person is your child's biological parent is to ask them to take a blood test or DNA test. These tests are also called paternity tests.

A DNA test is a medical test that compares a sample of your child's DNA with a DNA sample from the person who you think is your child's biological parent. The test results will show how likely they are to be your child's parent.

Usually, the DNA is taken from a cheek swab or a blood test. A cheek swab is a way to collect DNA from the cells on the inside of a person's cheek.

Find a medical lab

If the person agrees to do a DNA test, make an appointment at a lab. You should talk to the other person about how you will share the cost of the test.

The lab will ask to see photo identification for everyone being tested. They do this to check that they're testing the right person.

Some labs offer a legal test and a non-legal test. If you need to use the results of the test in court, you need to do a legal test.
