3. Go to mediation
Question and answer
What are my options before my eviction hearing?Mediation is available on the day of your hearing.
The (LTB) has employees called Dispute Resolution Officers (DROs) who try to help landlords and tenants reach settlement agreements. DROs are sometimes also called mediators. To start the process, both the landlord and tenant must agree to use a DRO to try to negotiate a settlement.
If you want to use , you should think of possible solutions to your eviction problem. Then, on the day of the hearing, you should:
- arrive early to the hearing, and
- tell the LTB that you want mediation.
You do not have to go to mediation. You and your landlord can try to work out an agreement without a mediator's help. But going to mediation can be helpful because you will usually get more information about your landlord's case against you.
You can bring a lawyer or a paralegal to represent you in mediation. And you can have someone else to help you as a support person, such as a family member, a friend, or a social worker.
