Painting your home because of disrepair
Question & Answer
Can I hang decorations or paint the walls in my rental unit? You might want to paint your home because the paint is peeling or scratched. If you want to paint because of disrepair, you should first ask your landlord to do the painting. It's your landlord's job to repair and maintain your home. This includes painting. Read more about your landlord's maintenance responsibilities.
It's a good idea to put your maintenance request in writing. Give your landlord a reasonable amount of time to respond and to do the painting.
If your landlord refuses to do the work, you can also choose to paint your home yourself. But be careful to avoid causing damage. Keep the receipts for any painting supplies you purchased. You can ask your landlord to pay you back the money you spent to repair the paint. If they don't pay, you can ask the LTB to them to pay.
