What is a permanent resident travel document and how do I apply?You can apply for a (PR) travel document online or by mail.
Apply online
Create an account on the Permanent Residence Portal or sign in to your existing account.
Complete the Application for a Permanent Resident Card (IMM 5444) digitally in the portal. If you need more space, you can upload a separate signed document with your name, number, and the number of the question you are answering. And upload:
- a completed Document Checklist – form IMM5644
- copies of all required supporting documents including the fee receipt and proof that you meet the residency requirement
You may also need to complete and upload other forms, depending on your situation.
Apply on paper
You can apply on paper if your nearest visa application centre (VAC) allows this. Before you apply, contact your nearest VAC. You can find the VAC closest to you on IRCC’s website.
If you apply on paper, you'll need to print, fill out, and sign the required forms, including:
- Application for a Permanent Resident Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (IMM 5444). If you need more space, include a separate signed sheet of paper with your name, Unique Client Identifier (UCI) number, and the number of the question you are answering.
- a completed Document checklist IMM 5644
- any other forms that apply to your situation
You'll also need to submit photocopies of the required documents including your fee receipt and proof that you met the . Pay your fee online and print the fee receipt.
