3. Learn about the knowledge requirement

A permanent resident who wants to become a Canadian citizen usually takes a citizenship test to show that they know enough about Canada and what it means to be a Canadian citizen.

The test includes questions about Canadian geography and history, and how the Canadian government is set up.

But you don't have to do this if:

• you're younger than 18 years of age
• you're 55 years of age or older
• you apply for and get a waiver that says you don't have to show that you know enough about Canada

It's very difficult to get a waiver. So if you want to ask for one, it's important to get legal help.

Proving that you meet the knowledge requirement

So, if you're between 18 and 54 years of age, you usually have to pass a test about Canada and what it means to be a Canadian citizen. Most people take the test in writing.

If it would be hard for you to do the test in writing, you can have a citizenship officer ask you the questions and you tell them the answers.
