3. Read the instructions and gather documents

Before you apply to renew or replace your (PR) card, make sure you review the eligibility requirements, Instruction Guide, and Document Checklist.

And pay your $50 processing fee online. You submit the fee receipt with your application.

You must be in Canada:

  • to apply for a PR card
  • while you wait for your PR card to arrive
  • to get your PR card

Gather documents

Gather the supporting documents you need based on the instruction guide and document checklist.

Make sure you include at least 2 pieces of to show that you met the residency requirement. For example, your evidence can be photocopies of:

  • employment records or pay stubs
  • bank statements
  • (CRA) Notice of Assessment for the 5 years immediately before the application
  • evidence that you received benefits from Canadian government programs
  • rental agreements
  • club memberships

There may be other documents that prove you met your residency requirement. Get legal help if you're not sure what to include.

Urgent processing

You can check online to see how long it takes to process a PR card application.

You might be able to apply for urgent processing of your PR card application. For example, you might urgently need a PR card to travel if a is sick. Make sure to include the additional documents IRCC requires to explain the urgency. But you still might not get your PR card in time.
