5. Get a decision

After you've submitted your application, you can check the status of your application online.

If you move or change your address, phone number or any other contact information after you apply, tell Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) using their web form.

Application approved

If IRCC approves your application, they usually mail you your (PR) card. IRCC only sends PR cards to Canadian addresses.

Sometimes IRCC may ask you to pick up your PR card at an IRCC office. When you go to pick it up, you must bring

  • your passport or other travel document
  • the original versions of any documents you submitted copies of when you applied

Application refused

If IRCC refuses your application for a new PR card, you need to get legal help. Your options depend on the reason that IRCC refused.
