Ask if they will agree to a maximum amount
Question & Answer
My car needs to be fixed. What should I think about?Instead of asking for an , you can ask the repair shop to set a maximum amount to fix your car. This means that you set a maximum cost for the repairs to your car, instead of agreeing to an estimated repair cost.
If the repairs cost more than the maximum amount you set, the repair shop must either:
- get your permission before continuing the repairs
- stop doing further repairs, or
- not charge you for the repairs they do above the maximum amount
A repair shop can refuse to do the repairs if they think your maximum amount is too low. But if they do agree to your maximum amount, they cannot charge you more than the maximum amount.
