I’m going to be a parent. Can I get EI?If you're not able to work for medical reasons, you might be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits.
You might be able to get these benefits if:
- you're sick
- you were sick before your child was born
- you have a miscarriage or stillbirth within the first 19 weeks of your pregnancy
- you end your pregnancy within the first 19 weeks
For example, if you have medical problems with your pregnancy, your doctor might tell you to stop working before your maternity leave starts. If this happens, you can apply to get sickness benefits before getting maternity benefits.
