2. Learn more about the types of RGI housing

There are different housing options depending on where you live in Ontario. Here are some examples of the housing choices you might have:

  • apartment owned by your city
  • townhouse owned by a private landlord
  • single-family home owned by a non-profit organization

You can only apply for buildings that have units with the right number of bedrooms for your size or medical needs. Your has rules about how big a rental unit you can live in. For example, Windsor-Essex County has a rule that the biggest rental unit for a married couple with no children is a one-bedroom.

Specialized housing

Your service manager will also ask you if you would like to apply for housing meant for people who belong to certain groups or who have certain needs. You should only apply for these types of housing if you belong to that group or have that need.

Here are some examples of the specialized housing that may be available in your community:

  • housing for people over the age of 60
  • housing for people who speak French as their first language
  • housing for women fleeing domestic violence and their children
  • supportive housing for people with disabilities
