3. Get translations if needed

If all or part of a document that you need to send is not in English or French, then you must get an English or French translation.

With your you must include:

  • a photocopy of the document that needs to be translated,
  • a photocopy of the English or French translation of the document, and
  • an original written declaration from the translator.

The translator's written declaration must say that they:

  • understand English or French and the language of the original document, and
  • believe that the translation is complete and correct.

If you do not use a professional translator, the person who translates the document must swear the statement in front of a Commissioner for Affidavits.

A Commissioner for Affidavits is someone who has the power to sign your affidavits or declarations. They do this after you swear or affirm that the information in a document is true. A lawyer, paralegal, municipal clerk, or notary public, can be a Commissioner for Affidavits.

If a professional translator did the translation, they do not need to swear the written declaration.
