4. Get a decision

The Registrar of the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) looks into all reports of abuse.

They must send an inspector to the home if the report is about something causing harm or risk of harm to a resident. The inspection must happen right away if the harm or risk of harm is serious.

They could also ask the police to investigate if it looks like a crime has been committed.

Outcome of your complaint

The Registrar reviews your complaint and decides what to do about it. If you gave your contact information, they must tell you, in writing:

  • what action they'll be taking
  • that they won't be taking any action
  • how to ask for a review of their decision
