3. Review the Notice of Hearing and appeal docket

First, the Canada Employment Insurance Commission sends all the information it has that relates to your to the Employment Insurance Board of Appeal (EI BOA). This includes:

  • the file,
  • Service Canada's reconsideration decision, and
  • the written submission that explains the reasons for the reconsideration decision.

After getting these documents, the EI BOA schedules a hearing.

The Canada Employment Insurance Commission shares the documents because it oversees the Employment Insurance (EI) program. Service Canada manages the EI program and makes EI decisions on behalf of the Commission.

Information about your hearing

You will get:

  • a Notice of Hearing letter, and
  • the appeal docket.

The Notice of Hearing tells you the date and time of the hearing, and whether it will be in person or online. You also get information on how to:

The appeal docket has all the information that will be used at your hearing. Review all the documents so you know the facts and evidence. Bring the docket with you to the hearing.

You may withdraw or end your appeal at any time before or during the hearing.

You can go on your own and represent yourself in your appeal. But it's a good idea to contact your local community legal clinic for information and advice.
